Poster en relief, le retour du roi

On continue avec un nouveau poster en relief.
Pour celui-ci, j'ai retravaillé et simplifié le lion que j'avais précédemment réalisé. 

Le résultat final devait tenir dans un format A4, rendant la sculpture assez difficile à assembler, principalement au niveau de la mâchoire de la bête où les languettes mesuraient moins d'un mm d'épaisseur.

Keep on going with a new relief poster.
For this one, I worked back on and simplified the lion I made.

The final result had to fit on a A4 paper format, making the assembling pretty tricky as the tabs around the jaw ended up really small.

In the eye of the tiger

De retour sur la terre des animaux avec un autre gros chat. Après le lion, le tigre ! Inspiré du sobre mais très efficace logo de Papier Tigre, une boutique papier que je recommande grandement.

Back on animal land with another big cat. After the lion, the tiger ! Inspired by the minimal yet efficient Papier Tigre logo, a paper store that I highly recommend.

So, Superman 3D poster

Pour ce nouveau projet, j'ai souhaité explorer une nouvelle facette du papier en travaillant sur un projet qui me trottait dans la tête depuis un moment, à savoir réaliser des posters en relief, toujours à l'aide de mes amis les polygones. 

Pour ce faire, j'ai choisi le logo du dernier reboot cinématographique de DC, soit celui de Man of steel.

For this new project, I wanted to work on another aspect of paper with something that was in my head for a while : making a 3D poster, still with the help of my fellow polygon friends.

To do so, I choosed DC latest movie reboot, the logo from Man of steel.

C'est également la première fois que je travaille avec du papier coloré. 

En attendant de recevoir un papier de meilleur qualité, j'ai réalisé un prototype avec un papier coloré assez épais. 

Il ne me restait à porté de main que quelques morceaux de rouge. J'ai ainsi imprimé un négatif blanc à reporter sur les chutes de rouge qu'il me restait. 

L'assemblage peut commencer.

This is also the first time I work with colored paper.

At this point, I'm still awaiting to get a better quality paper so I made a prototype using regular colored paper. 

I didn't have enough red though so I had to print a white negative and trace it on what was left of my red.

Au final, je suis très satisfait du prototype. Les couleurs vives rendraient mieux sur le logo classique de Superman cela dit.

In the end, I'm pretty happy with the prototype. The bright colors would suit the classic logo better IMO though.

Mis à jour avec un papier métallique de meilleur qualité.
Maintenant on se comprend.

Roi des forêts

De retour sur les animaux avec un projet qui me tenait à coeur.
Pour cette prochaine sculpture, j'ai décidé de relever un nouveau défi en réalisant un cerf en papier à échelle réelle, soit environ 1m40 de haut.

Je commence ainsi par le modéliser en 3D. 
Le petit détail qui tue ? Les deux bois sont différents l'un de l'autre. Cela peut sembler insignifiant mais cela participe grandement au "réalisme" de la sculpture.

Back to animals with a project that I really cared about.
For this next sculpture, I decided to take on a new challenge making a full scale stag, standing 4 ft 7 inches high.

I started modeling it in 3D.
Pay attention to the antlers, they are different from one to another. It's a small detail but it participates a lot to the "realism" of the piece. 

Je me retrouve ainsi avec 56 feuilles A4 à découper et plier.
13 : le nombre d'heures qu'il m'a fallut pour en arriver à bout..

Then, I end up with 56 A4 pages to cut and score.

Une fois que toutes les pièces sont rangées et triées, je peux entamer l'assemblage !

Once all the pieces are sorted and organized, I can start assembling the beast !

Les bois sont séparés afin de faciliter le transport et empêcher la sculpture de s'abîmer, étant les pièces les plus fragiles.

The antlers are separate to prevent the sculpture from taking damages, as they are fragile pieces.

Of House Baratheon

C'est de loin la sculpture qui a demandé le plus de travail. Une trentaine d'heures au total réparties sur une semaine. Je suis très satisfait du résultat et je suis persuadé qu'il y a des choses à développer en matière de décoration avec ce genre de sculptures en papier. Une vitrine de Noël par exemple tout en papier donnerait un rendu très intéressant n'est-ce pas ?

Et en prime, une petite vidéo de moi en train d'assembler la bête !

This is by far the most complicated piece I've worked on. Over 30 hours of work spread over a week. I'm really happy with the result and I'm sure there's something to develop in term of decoration with this kind of paper sculptures. A christmas window display all in paper would look incredible right ?

Space polygons

De retour sur un projet commissionné. Pour les besoin d'un vidéo clip, le réalisateur m'a envoyé des croquis de formes qu'il souhaitait que je fabrique en papier. 
C'est la première fois que je suis amené à travailler avec des formes plus abstraites.

Back on a commissioned project. A director sent me his sketches of some forms he'd like me to make out of paper.
This is the first time I got to work with more abstract shapes.

"Star"

Nous avons donc ce que j'appelle une "étoile" et un "vaisseau". 
J'ai commencé par la première, me paraissant nettement plus simple à modéliser.

So we have what I'd call a "star" and a "spaceship".
I started with the first one, looking much easier to build.

Shuriken !

Celle-ci était plutôt simple.
Celle qui suit en revanche a demandé un peu plus de travail.

This one was pretty easy.
The following one on the other hand, was a bit trickier to make.

"Spaceship"

Pour simplifier l'assemblage, le "vaisseau" est divisé en 4 parties : le haut, le corps, la boule et la pièce en dessous.

To make the assembling easier, I divided the "spaceship" into 4 pieces : the top, the body, the ball and the piece under it.

Les deux sculptures mesurent autours de 40cm de haut.

Both sculptures are around 15 inches high.

Army of the 12 Rhinos - Business card

Dans ma quête de nouveaux projets et de partenaires, je me suis dis qu'il serait bien de me créer une carte de visite. Puis, plutôt que de me contenter d'une carte traditionnelle, pourquoi pas en faire une plus originale, après tout je travaille le papier en volume. 

C'est ainsi que je me suis lancé dans la fabrication de ma carte personnalisé. Seulement, que choisir ? Et bien j'ai choisi de modéliser une tête de rhinocéros. Pourquoi ? Parce qu'esthétiquement et visuellement le rhinocéros, avec ses cornes, se prêtait parfaitement à une modélisation en low poly. J'ai toujours aimé cet animal alors il ne me restait plus qu'à m'exécuter.

In my quest for new projects and partners, I thought it would be nice to create a business card. Then, instead of doing a regular card i told myself it would be cool to have a more original one, in 3D. After all, I work with paper in volume.

That's how I started working on my personal card. I just need to choose what to make.
Well, I decided to go with a rhino. Why ? Because aesthetically and visually because of its horns, a rhino was meant to be modeled in low poly IMO.
I've always liked this animal so now, I just have to make it.

Quand même plus sympa qu'une carte traditionnelle non ?

Bon je reconnais que j'ai tout de même besoin d'une carte "plate", le temps de fabrication d'une de ces petites bêtes s'élève tout de même à 3/4 d'heure. 

J'en ai ainsi fabriquer 12 à distribuer dans ma recherche de clients.

Okay, I have to admit I still need a "flat" card, making one of these little beast takes 3/4 of an hour.

I made 12 of these to distribute while looking for new clients.

Le résultat final est tel que je l'avais imaginé, il ne leur reste plus qu'à trouver un nouveau propriétaire.

Pour rester dans le thème, j'ai également designé une carte de visite plus conventionnelle.

J'ai repris les traits du rhinocéros afin d'en retracer les polygones.

The ending result came out just as I pictured it. Now they only have to get a new owner.
